Does anyone know if I can get a job even without having the Permanent Residence visa? Is that possible? Or should I wait until I get the visa to start looking for jobs?

You can try to get a work permit. In fact, it might improve your chances of getting a PR card.

How do you get a work permit? Does the permit enable you to work at most jobs, or is it for a specific job? how long does it take to get it? how does it improve your chances of getting a PR card?

My girlfriend is planning to come to canada for 6 months and we're trying to figure out the best way to do it. She wants to work while in Calgary with the hopes of becoming a PR.

You get a confirmed job offer from an employer, they apply to HRSDC and then you apply to your Consulate. You can see the full process at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/index.html. How long it takes? Well, take a look at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times-int/15-temp-workers.html.

How it improves your chances of getting PR? It gives you 10 extra points on the Skilled Worker Application and it also allows you to apply for the Alberta PNP.

So does it mean that all my gf has to do is be offerd a job and the employer, if they choose to, applies to HRSDC? and she doesnt have to do anything from england before she leaves?

Well, she does have to apply to CIC once the employer gets the job offer. And I STRONGLY advise asking the employer to request to request a permanent labour market opinion. As for the work permit, I am unsure how long it is usually for but I know that you can extend it and you can find out more info about that at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/extend-worker.html .

I seriously recommend staying with the employer for which you have the work permit with until you get your PR card. And try to get Provincial Nomination.
